Speak & Span
Ever attended a function where someone was giving a motivational speech? Listening attentively, words are spoken that can create a desire to change, and prompt a feeling to conform to suite a new perspective for the betterment of a particular area of life. The motivational speaker has built the speech from many things, experiences, books, listening, observing, stories of success and failure…
There is something about a well synthesized speech that compels and leaves the listener feeling motivated to change. Motivational speakers serve to motivate one to change their mind, will, and emotions toward a specific thing. Some will think about change, some will not change, and some will change. It’s not so much that truth was not present, but these speeches sometimes connect with another part of the person, the soul. The soul is the emotional part of human nature. Our emotions are constantly changing and we often act according to feelings at a particular moment. So whatever feels good, we engage to and whatever doesn’t feel good, we disengage from.
Hebrews 4:12- "For the word of God [is] quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit...”
The word of God is truth. When being encountered by it, lives will be changed for eternity’s sake. As the word of God is spoken it’s like water, it begins traveling through the air, reaching the listener’s ear, runs off into the recesses of a man, flowing and washing, beginning the transformation process.
He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. Hearing is important. Choosing to hear is consent to the word of God to flow, fill, and nurture the spirit man who needs growth, cultivation, and hydration after battling the flesh. Once the spirit man receives what it needs, it is empowered to stand, span, and speak what needs to be so that the flesh comes under subjection to the word of God. This is what Paul wrote, “but I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway (1 Corinthians 9:27).
So, let’s consider the importance of the words we speak verbally or on paper. May they be life, strength and health for someone’s spirit man to stand, SPEAK, and SPAN up to the flesh.
